LOCAL NEWS.
NELSON BOARD OF WORKS. Thursday, April 12, Present : Messrs. Beutley, D. Burns, Carter, Eout, Wright, Watts, and R. Burn ; Mr. Bentley in the chair. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. It was resolved that Mr. P. R. Mills be allowed £50 in advance on his contract, subject td " the ' payment of the Dun Mountain Company's order. An application was made by Mr. W. Akersten, for permission to lay rails across the Haven-road for a temporary purpose. The application was agreed to suhject to the approval of Messrs. Bentley and darter. Mr. Field applied for permission to erect two posts for lamps, at the Mitre Hotel. Resolved that the application be granted under the inspection of Mr. Wright. Mr. Carter having reported the bad state of the entrance to Washington Valley, it was resolved that the same be repaired, subject to the approval of Messrs. Benoley and Carter. Mr. Wright reported that he had with Mr. Rout, examined the Brook-street 'stream, at
its junction with the Maitai." They recommended that the approaches to the bridge should be gravelled, aud that a hole on the Nile-street side, should be filled up. The recommendation was agreed to. It was resolved, that Manuka-street waterway be lowered some 15 inches, and the road made rounding from Mr. 11. D. Jackson's, to the stream, and to Collingwood-street. A report of Messrs. Burn and Watts respecting work to be done in Grove-street, was postponed till next meeting. A letter was read from the Superintendent stating that the prisoners would be allowed to fill the gravel cart, when the gravel should be wanted for repairs. A report of Messrs. Bentley and D. Burns, in reference to repairs required in Toi-Toi Valley, at the corner of Hampden and Vin-cent-streets, was postponed until next meeting. The proposed by-law for the regulating of cabs and other vehicles standing in the streets, was postponed. Messrs. D. Burns and Rout reported that they had examined the board fixed at the end of the premises occupied by Mr. Lucas, and found that it projected over his boundary line, opposite the property occupied by Mr. James Tingle. They expressed an opinion that the Board could not at present interfere, in consequence of their ignorance of the exact frontages. An application was received from, the proprietors of the Evening Mail, askiug for a share of advertisements from the Board. It was resolved, that the application be complied with. A letter was read from Mr. Jacob Frank, asking for the lamp to be fixed on Tasmanstreet side, and requesting that the road be repaired. It was resolved, that the lamp be fixed. It was resolved that tenders be advertised for, on Mr. Akersten's plan of bridge, in Tas-man-street, and flanking the approaches. A map was received from Mr. Coe. Resolved that the money, £10 10s., be paid for the same if correct,, to be approved of by Messrs. Wright aud Rout. A letter was received from Mr. D. Grant,, and referred to the Secretary. An application from Mr. James Jennings, for payment for work done in Vincentstreet, was referred to Messrs. Carter and D. Burns to pass the work. A letter was received from Mr. Pollock, the Secretary to the board, requesting leave of absence for a few weeks, and tendering his resignation as Secretary, in consequence of finding his time too much taken up in his capacity of Bankruptcy Inspector. It was resolved that a person qualified to act as Secretary and Surveyor be advertised for, applications to be addressed to the chairman, on or before the 26th inst. It was resolved that Messrs. Bentley, E. Burn, Rout, and Wright be deputed to define the duties devolving upon the new officer, and that they report at the next meeting. The Board adjourned till Thursday the 26th April.
