TARANAKI.
The war has borue more heavily on this province than on any other — still there are signs of returning animation and a healthier state of things, for the people are spreadiug over the country again, and agriculture and other forms of industry are beiug resumed, and iu some cases extended. We must not omit to mention that an importaut experiment is beiug tried at the Sugar-loaves, about two miles from town, where petroleum has been found in considerable quantities at a depth of 60 feet. If, as seems probable, there is a copious supply of oil to be had for bor iug, it is hardly possible to exaggerate the beneficial influence of the discovery on the material prosperity of the province. Anniversary Eaces. — This second edition of our races took place on Monday and Tuesday last. There were not many people present;. Of the five races run, St. Patrick won three, as he liked, viz., Welter Stakes, Ladies' Purse, and Anniversary Cup value £40. The Maiden Plate was wou by Mr. Churchill's Grasshopper, and the Hurdle Race by Mr. Olson's Taranaki Grasshopper. Consolation Stakes was won by Mr. Henderson's Kitty. A Hack Hurdle Raee was won by Mr. R. Well's Maneater. — Ilerald, April 5 th.
