TARANAKI.
We have Taranaki papers to the 7th inst. Petroleum. — The resolution recommending that the lease to. be granted to Messrs. Carter and Co. should be for nine years in all, was passed by the Provincial Council on Thursday evening. Gold. — We hear that some small specks of gold have been found near the White Cliffs ; it is as yet merely the ' color,' but further explorations are being made. Harbor Works. — In tiie Provincial Council the following resolution was passed on Wednesday evening last : — li That a respectful address be presented to his Honor the Superintendent, requesting him to invite 'Messrs. Balfour and Doyue to visit the province, for the purpose of carrying out the surveys and making their report on the proposed harbor at the Sugar Loaves, and this Council, being satisfied that that neighborhood is the most desirable one, approves of the expenditure of the sum necessary for that limited survey." — Taranaki Herald.
