WEST COAST GOLD-FIELDS.
OKARITA. Pkogress op the Town. — The Okarita Times of the 24th March says, its advancement during the past few weeks has been extraordinary, and what was a thinly scattered township, is now comparatively speaking, a well built town, every available section, even oat into the swamp has been taken up, and for frontages to the raaiii street from two. to three hunt! red pounds have beea given ; a frontage of 13 feet in the "Strand" next to the Criterion, was, sold on Wednesday for £120; even in the kick street, sections are fetching high prices.
A young man named Alfred J. CoAveil, who, it was stated, is the son of Mr. Joshua Cowell, was charged yesterday morning, before the City Bench, ■with iorging a cheque on his father, and William Home was charged with uttering. Detective Hudson, who had arrested the prisoners at the Theatre Royal on the previous evening, said there were other charges against them, and the Bench granted a remand till next day. — M. Herald, March 21. A correspondent of the Ballaarat Star says : — " On Wednesday last, a man named John Clanehy, residing at Warrenhcip, disposed of some farm produce in Ballaarat. Eeturning home he called at a house in the Melbourne road, where he had some drink and ultimately went to sleep. On awaking next morning, he found his purse, which contained £7 17s. 6d., gone. He went to Ballaarat, got a search warrant, had the house searched, but neither purse nor money could be found. During the search the constable, seeing one of the flooring boards loose, removed it, and found beneath a brass-barrelled blunderbuiiSj heavily loaded, together with a bug full of ammunition. Rather significant."
