KANIERI.

Our Kanieri neighbors are progressing most favorably, and every day display more confidence in the almost unlimited resources of their fields. Now that water for sluicing purposes has been brought to bear upon it the oid terrace is indeed "redevivus," for those who have already commenced sluicing find that the ground pays as well or even better than was anticipated. Using a small box head of water from 5 to 10 ozs. a day can be washed out, and some of the old heaps of hopperings and tailings on being submitted to the sluicing process have given results which were quite unexpected. One heap of refuse matter yielded 7-J ozs. On Tuesday two fresh shafts were bottomed, or rather the auriferous wash was reached, which in each case yielded capital prospects. The first was obtained by M'Grath and party, who obtained one pennyweight of gold to the dish of washdirt, but were prevented sinking any deeper than the first layer of boulders through excess of ■water. Their claim is nearly in the centre of the flat. The other prospect was obtained out of a shaft which was sunk in a claim situated close to the prospector's, under the north terrace. Out of four buckets of the washdirt three pennyweights of gold were extracted. — Hokitika Leader.
