The P.N.Z. & A.R.M. Co.'s steamer Phoebe, arrived in our harbor, at 11 a.m., this day, from- Southern Ports. Her dates of arrival and departure are as follow :— Left Uluff Harbor, at 4 p.m., on the 12th; arrived at Port Chalmers the following morning, at 6.40; sailed for Lyttelton, 15th, at 4.25 p.m., arriving on the 16th, at 0.25 p.m. Left for Wellington, 17th, at 3 p.m., arriving' on the 18th, at. 8.45 a.m. Left for Picton, 19th, at 3 p.m., arriving at 8.45 p.m. Sailed for Nelson, on the 20th, at 2.3 a.vi., arriving as above. Experienced calms throughout the passage from Wellington.- The Phaebe brings a fair complement of passengers for this port and Hokitika. The Wanganui, s., arrived lust evening, from Wanganui, and sailed this morning, for Wellington. She brought a number of excursionists, for the Nelson races. On Saturday morning the steamer Thane made her appearance in the Okarita offing, and cast anchor. About 5. p.m. when it was nearly high water, she made an attempt to cross the bar, but turned again as the harbor-master would not hoist the red flag for her to cross the bar, there being only eight feet of water on it — a narrow strip about ten feet wide. The harbor-master signalled to her that if she could stand a bump she might cross, but as the Thane was drawing eight feet of water, she refused to try it. At high water, on Saturday evening, she again made the attempt, this time coming close in-shore anent the north spit ; as she reached the point of it she stuck firm and fast, as everybody- expected she would, she coming too close iu-siiore. On Monday evening she managed to slew herself round, but I dons think she has' altered her postion much for the better. Her passengers got ashore all safe. A good part of her cargo has been got out with little or no damage. The Challenge is still in. her old position in the rivor, wailing for the spring tides to release her from it. — Chronicle. The Kennedy, s.s. arrived last night after a fine rtm up of five hours and a half. She brings up the intelligence that the Thane s.s. is once more afloat, having on Thursday last, been removed from her dangerous position on the North Spit into the river. Save a little damage to her sternpost she is quite uninjured. The Kennedy also reports that the p.s. Challenge, which for some days has been lying aground on the spit between the river brandies, has succeeded in backing off on Thursday night, but in attempting to. leave the river yesterday morning with a schooner in tow, again took the ground on the South Spit. Her position is not, we arc happy to say, a dangerous one. — W. C. Times, March 17.
