IMPORTANT NEWS FROM THE EAST COAST.
11.M.5.5. 'Eclipse 3 arrived at Auckland, from the East Coast. That vessel brings here the head of the Pai Mariri superstition, the prophet Te Ua. He comes as a guest of his Excellency Sir George Grey, who landed at the Kawau, but who sent Te Ua on to Auckland with instructions that he should be entertained at the Government House. While his Excellency was at Napier, the natives came into the town in great numbers, and the Governor held two meetings with them, in the Court House; left Napier on March Ist, and arrived at Wairoa same day at 8 p.m. ; the Governor was received at the beach by a large number of natives in a very enthusiastic manner; left on Thursday for Poverty Bay, arrived on Saturday 3rd there was great excitement among the natives, who welcomed the Governor with volleys of musketry, and the war dance ; the vessel left the same evening, returning to Napier with the Superintendent, and the ,160 Maori prisoners, who are to be sent to the Chatham Islands. The natives seemed generally disgusted with Pai Marirism, and greatly incensed at Tc Ua. — New Zealand Herald, March 8.
