The Bakers' Award
The first Dominion award to affect the employment of bakers has made its appearance. It provides for a week of 48 hours, not more than 10 of which can be worked on any one day. Work must not start before 4 a.m. except ou Saturdays and days preceding a public holiday. Overtime is to be paid for at the following rates: Time and a quarter up to 6 p.m. from knocking off dime, rate and a half till 10 p.m., double rates after 10 p.m. to time of starting. The wages have been fixed at £3 ss. for a foreman baker or pastrycook, £2 15s. for a journeyman baker, and £y Bs. for a baker's laborer, who shall not assist. in actually making bread; a jobber to be paid 11s. per day. Provision is n:ad«s for incompetent workers and for small country bakehouses. Preference is given to unionists provided the union admits all so be* and industrious applicants to membership at the usual rate of subscription. The tiev< award came into force on November 18.
