LEGAL COMEDY ENDED.

HARVEY BREAKS DOWN

GOVERNMENT'S CONCERN AND

LONDON'S EFFORTS

(Special to The Maoivland Worker.)

WAIHI. Nov. 29

Legal comedy ended. Not one Federation member fined. Scabs fined £1 each nnd costs; Delaney 10s. and costs. Two Federation sympathisers fined. Magistrate's concluding remarks eulogistic of scabs. Every shred of evidence debarred concerning hall-breaking and seizure of store and ordering peopli out oftown. In every case it was fully proved that scabs assailed Foclerationists. It was admitted in court that scabs were armed with batons made for the purpose.

Lunrlon subjected scab witnesses to merciless cropr.-rxamination. Made Harvey cry in witness-box. Harvey lost head and shouted "Shut up!" Harvey shown he'd never remained in one billet iuNew Zenland more than a few weeks; also proved regular ring-fighter.

No examination of scabs permitted re outrages of November 12 and 13 and after. Every offnri made to vilify unionists and glorify scabs. Government apparently greatly concerned over Federation statements. Cullon was put in tho box to whitewash police and praise scabs; complained that even he had been called scab.

Although unionists debarred from referring to events after date of alleged offence, Cullen was permitted to give evidence ro Noakes' case, which took place two days after —later than tho case in which he was a witness.

Strenuous efforts were made by the prosecution to fasten another man's convictions on Barrett, witness for the defence. During Kidd's case, counsel for prosecution declared he had a letter written by Kidd and threatened Kidd with perjury. It then transpired that counsel's statement was a lie.

Luirlon denounced the tactics as Fcandalou*. Extraordinary things done by police in coi-'iortion with Barfitt's case. Lundon indignantly denounced same in open court. —HOLLAND.
