VALEDICTORY. The Stockton '.Miners , Union hae lost an active member" iii the""person of John Milligan, who, having arrived at the allotted span of three score years and ten, has retired from the services of tho company. The occasion was opportune for a few friends to assemble together in Mr. McNarn's on Saturday evening (Mr. D. Alexander in the cbair), when the time passed all too quickly in music, song and BtoryThe chairman, in an appropriate address, dwelt on the services rendered by the guest in all movements having for their object the uplifting of the masses. He was.a member of the union committee, also the Medical Association Committee, and attended to his duties regularly and efficiently, and his counsel was at all times invaluable in momentous questions. The chairman then presented Mr. Milligan with a Smokers' outfit, on behalf of a few of his Stockton comrades. ...
Friend Milligan feelingly replied, expressing a wish that, although no longer.in the company's employ, he be permitted to attend the business and committee .meetings of the; .Stockton Miners' Union. The wants of the inner man were kindly supplied by Mrs. McNarn.
Songs were contributed by the following gentlemen : Messrs. J. Binnie, G. Hudson, T. Masterson, A. Steele, R. Woodger, H. G. Webster, D. Alexander, W. Drummond and C. Kelly (the latter gentleman excelling himself in several auld Scotch sangs). At a suitable opening in the programme, Mr. Peter Martin,' Mr. Chas. Kelly and others eulogised the guest, these gentlemen having known him for a very considerable number of years. The singing of "Auld Lang Syne" (led by Mr. Kelly) terminated a most enjoyable evening.—HECTOß.
