THAT EXPLOSION AND HOW IT OCCURRED. SHOOTING AND FIRE.
A correspondent sends a registered letter telling that the Waikino Federationists and their ball were mobbed on Monday, November 11, at 8 p.m., when the ball door came in with a bang and missiles followed. An added contingent of scabs from Waihi had arrived, making 150, armed with batons and firearms. A fe>v headed fcho rush, the Federationists retreating to the back. The rearmost striker stepped back into the main hull, having seized an Indian olub, whereupon the scabs returned to the front door. "A spark was then seen coming from the roar of the ppahs to the hall door and alighted on the path a foot or two from the liajl steps. This was apparently some high explosive, for there was then heard a loud report. The police njbw put in an appearance, and headed by Sergeant Cowan and Detective Cooney, marched into the hall and made a search for dynamite. It did not occur to them that the scabs had explosives while working in the mine." On Tuesday morning work was suspended at the battery, the scabs with iron bars scouring the hills for strikers and the police doing nothing. in the day a picket, was chased and fjred upon. It was an exciting day. In the evening the scabs visited the pickets' houses, and ordered them t6 leave within 24 hours. One house was fired. More anon.
