F. G. Evans' Death
THE INQUEST. BODY REMOVED TO AUCKLAND. IMPRESSIVE SCENE. The following items arc from " N.Z. Times'': — WAIHI, November 14. INQUEST OPENS. The inquest on Fredc-rick Evans was opened this afternoon before Mr. William Wallnutt, coroner, and the following jurymen : G. Tawlor (foreman), A. Dick, M. G. Poiner, A- E. Ellis, J. Murray, and R. H. Holmes. Inspector Wright' represented the police. After viewing the body, evidence of identification was given by Albert Goldsmith, who said he had known deceased for about 16 years. Deceased had said he was a member of the Waihi Miners' Union, and was one of the strike pickets. Evans was 31 years of age, and was born at Ballarat (Vie-
toria). His wife and two young children live in Waihi. At the request of Inspector Wright, the inquest was adjourned until Tuesday next. WAIHI, November 15. The examination of the body of Frederick George Evans, the strike picket, who died in Waihi hospital on Wednesday afternoon, by the coroner's jury, together with the post mortem examination, showed that thero were no marks of violence on the body. The chief injury to the head was caused by the blow from the constable's baton, which was delivered oil the back -of the head, Evans having turned to got away after firing at the constable. The other injuries were to the face, but of a minor nature. It is, understood that death resulted from laceration ef the brain, caused by the blow from the baton. REMAINS LEAVE WAIHI. . The remains were placed aboard the express this morning en route for Auckland, where it is understood the interwill take place, and a demonstration' organised in connection therewith. Mrs. Evans, wife of the deceased, left by the same train, as 3lso did another contingent of Federationists — men, women and children—who seem to be getting away quietly.
