MT. LYELL MINERS ON THE

MINE.

At a mass meeting of Tasmanian miners, held at Gormanston on October 3, the following resolution was carried unanimously:—

We, the underground employees of the Mf, Lyell Co,, -at the North Mt. Lyell mine, say that we are absolutely afraid to continue working while the mine is in ite present condition. We say that the preservation of life and limb is of more importance to us than daily wages, and that we have lost all confidence in the Government inspector. That the inspecting workmen, Tffiessrs. Gadd and Simon, be instructed to give a full report on the mine, and that no workman shall return to work until our inspectors are allowed to make that inspection. Some arrangement wae, however, entered into under which the men were induced to return to work. On .Monday, October 14, the news came that & 'fire had broken out in the North Lyell mine and that the lives of 98 men who were below were in danger.
