CANTERBURY LABORERS' UNION.

BIG THINGS DOING

Th© ordinary meeting of the Canterbury Laborers' Union was held on Tuesday, October 1, Mr. J. Flood presiding. Mr. T. Armstrong, a member of the Federation of Labor Executive, was present, and received a hearty welcome. He gave a rousing speech on the.Reefton and Waihi trouble and Federation matters generally, and at the conclusion received a hearty round of applause. It was resolved to hold a meeting in Cathedral Square on Sunday afternoon to protest against the jailing of the Waihi men. 'It was also resolved to hold a monster demonstration on Saturday, October 12, in Latimer Square, to start at 10 o'clock with, protest resolutions and speeches, then to march through the city, returning to Latimer Square, when more speeches will be the order of the day. Other unions are to be invited to take part, and we are expecting to have a high time. It was resolved to vote £3 from the funds to assist the wives and children of the locked-out men at Reefton. Also resolved to vote £3 to assist the wives and children of the men on strike at W 7 aihi. Tho executive gave a full report on the strike at Lake Coleridge, and Messrs. Campbell and Cooke were instructed to proceed to the scene of action and endeavor to bring about a settlement of the dispute. The secretary was instructed to proceed to Timaru to attend the branch meeting on October 2. The union decided that a representative of the union should visit all iho branches once a month for educational purposes. At a meeting of Ihe Ashburton branch on September 27, Messrs Cooke and Paterson, being present as representatives from Christchurch, gave stirring addresses on the Reefton and Waihi trouble, after -rhich the branch voted £3 to assist the wives and children of those locked out. and on strike.

Mr. Cooke held an open-air meeting on Sunday evening, and explained to the Ashburton public all about Reefton and Waihi. He reoeived a good hearing, and he intends visiting Ashburton again in the near future.—A~. PATERSON.
