PREMIER'S REPLY.

"W. Rogers, Esq., Blackball. "I am in receipt of your telegram of the 17th ; nst., transmitting resolution carried at citizens' meeting. In stating that the Government have jailed Waihi Unionists you are misrepresenting the position. Certain men were brought before the court at Waihi for offences under the law in using language calculated to provoke a breach of the peace. The magistrate found the charges proved, and a verdict wns given to the effect that the men should find sureties to the amount of £10 in each case for their good behaviour in future. The men refused to find the necessary sureties, and the magistrate had no option under the law but "to commit them to imprisonment for the time being. The Government are doing neither more nor less than their duty in connection with this matter.—W. F. MASSEY."
