Heard and Said L==D Q==J That the Brisbane "Worker" refers to a recent issue of The Maoiuland Worker as "a dashing strike number." That our big brother of Brisbane (the first union-owned and union-controll-ed Labor journal in Australasia) is going stronger and stronger every day. That it .hadn't at its birth a shot in the locker, but since the day (March 1, 1890) it first saw the light it has become a power in the land. That its constantly-rising circulation (now nearing 30,000), its advertising and its job printing departments have grown to such proportions that it has felt itself "cribb'd, cabin'd and eoniin'd" in its present premises for some time cast. That to give itself room to expand and to cope with its ever-growing business it is now building a home for itself in the heart of the city. That our contemporary is going to do "big licks" in the future, take it from us, but its New Zealand namesake is going to do even bigger things and become a greater power. That we want an increased circulation for a start, and it's up to our workers and well-wishers togo after the subs. Get busy. That it is estimated there are at present no fewer than five millions of people in enforced idleness in the United States. That inillionaircdom and unemployment are twin ejrils of Capitalism. that if we do not reason we are bigots ; if we cannot, we are fools; if we dare not, wo are slaves. That the business instinct frequently takes the form of an easy conscience. That an American professor declares that within 500 rears there will be scarcely a woman left on earth with hair on her head. That 200 years hence a man with enough hair to make a part will be earning a large salary by exhibiting himself in dime museums. That an eminent brain specialist corroborates the view that baldness will one day be the fashion for botl\ men nnd women. Thnt the development of brain power will precede the 1033 of hair, and v '_iime will come when, to have cuily yiflSsi-a, .jiTO-lred ■■">n-s3-.-a-sfsiii of mental weakness. That present-day possessors of curly haiv are seldom endowed with intellectual attainments. That they are usually blessed with all the outward graces but few of th.? inner qualities of real, live men and women. That the majority of them think they own the ocean because they've got a v.-p.ve in their hair. That New Zealand's proudly-claimed titj A of "God's Own Country" is no bn;:er hers and heTS alone. That there is another rival in the field for the distinction. That Professor Oilrut'h. Federal Administrator of the Northern Territory <>f Australia, has buftely purloined the title from this one-time hum* of his und bestowed it upon his new charge. L'.lvnt it's a ense of being off with vln> old love and on with the new. That the Professor sees In tht Northern Territory a land of glorious climate, unknown mineral, pastoral and agiici.iltur.il wealth, and unlimited possirjiSitiea of development. Thr.t parting with things as they go requires more philosophy than taking tnings us they come. Pint a little knowledge is only dangerous when one is contented with it. That the Wellington Waterside Workers' Band is running a series of monthly socials, the second of which will be held in the Alexandra Hall on the 25th inst. That local devotees of the "light fantastic" and music-lovers cannot do better than put in the evening wit]; the band. That the ordinary- schoolmaster has the duties of a nursemaid, the pay of a navvy, and the life of a dog. -That the Bible-in-Behools League wants to load him with the last straw and give him the parson's work to do. Xhut the extravagant flamboyancy of language and tremendous egotism of King O'Malley, Commonwealth Minister for Home Affairs, have made him a target for much uncomplimentary criticism and even personal abuse from several of the Australian papers. fliat daring a recent debate O'Malley picturesquely phrased an opponent as *'a miserable, sulky, paralytic, onelegced, one-eyed muckworm —a hybrid without pride of ancestry or hope of posterity —a cross between a city guinea-pig and a country blowfly." (hat notwithstanding the Minister's megalomania and mannerisms., he is generally admitted to be a successful
