WHANGAREI CADETS.
A correspondent writes with regard to the recent alleged assault on Sergt. Parker by the senior cadets of Wha--*s;arei. He says that throughout the district compulsory military training is very unpopular, and that the boys are only treating it as such a damnable, criminal-making scheme deserves. Tlie Kovs have been chafing under the forced conditions of their drill for some time., and the officer in command has not bet--«re<i matters by his frequent ebul'itions of uncontrollable anger and his volleys of vituperative language. Finally, some lads "took to" and maltreated Sergt. Parker in Bank street one night after drill, the outcome if which will probably be some interesting local court cases. Charity is conscience money the rich give out of the much more they have taken from the sweat and blood of the toiler; it is salve for the wounds of the worker made out of hi* own tallow.
