Tho Canterbury Laborers' Union mot) on Tuesday, September 3, Mr J. Flood presiding. Five delegates were appointed to meet delegates from Ashburton and Timaru branches, to discuss the best means to be adopted in future to secure hotter conditions and wages, and to report to the quarterly meeting on September 17. Arrangements wore made to hold tho poll for the election of Federation officers on Saturday, September 14, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.; Mr. A. Paterson to he returning officer. A report was received from Lake Coleridge, which .showed that- the food supply was deteriorating, "that the winding-gear and shaft and timbering in tunnel were still unsafe- In view ot these; facts, a deputation, consisting of Messrs. H. A. Campbell, M- J. Ryan, and.!. Glover, was appointed to wait-on tho Minister of Public Works, place tho facts before him, and demand that the promised inquiry be held at once. Iti was also decided that workers be asked to keep away from Lake Coleridge until such time as conditions were improved. Tho following resolution was adopted, to be forwarded to the. Minister of Defence: "That this union emphatically protests against Ihe. contemplated imprisonment of defaulters under the Defence A/:t in. military barrack prisons or camps, as suggested by the M-inister of Defence." The Canterbury Slaughtermen's Union has donated £19 10s. io assist tho Reefton and Waihi men in their struggle for freedom. H. A: Campbell secured a verdict of £80 and costs against tbe Christchurch Tramway Board for alleged negligence in not supplying pVoper tools on their, construction verb?.—A. PATERSON. Secretary.
