PUBLIC MEETING AT HUNTLY. PROTESTS AGAINST JAILING OF
BOYS
A largely-attended meeting was held in the Masonic Hall, Huntly, on Sunday evening, August 4, for ths purpost of protesting against tho sentence of one month in jail passed on five Huntly boys who refused to take the oath of allegiance demanded by the Compulsory Military Training Act. Revs. Evans (Methodist) and Bntler ("Presbyterian), ans "Messrs. T)uncan and H. Beck addressed the meeting, condemning the action of the authorities. A -patient and attentive hearing was given each speaker. Tho proceedings concluded with a resolution being passed to the effect that the return of the boys lie marked by the observance of a half-holiday in the mines and the closing of business places. A visitor to the prison reports that the boys are cheerful, but he deplores tho fact that they are treated as ordinary criminals, with shorn heads and prison garb. They are to be liberated on the 22nd inst.
