OTAGO COAL MINES.
THE SITUATION AT PRESENT,
Though the dispute between the em* ployers and employees at the Kaitangata collieries has been settled, the men receiving a substantial increase and the public ha-ving to bear the cost, the position of the other companies and workers is far from satisfactory, says a Dunedin wire in the dailies. At Nightcaps, Green Island, Waronui, arid T*rafou, the r&ajority of the meuj are members of the Federation Union, and are asking for even better conditions than those obtained by the arbitrationists at Kaitangata. So far there has been nothing don© towards effecting/ a settlement of the disputes in which the parties mentioned are concerned. Judging by all that is said about towuj there is little prospect of the employers giving as much as the men. ask. The companies concerned do riot appear to Ife willing to take the Itaitangata Company s lead and substantially raise the priof' of coal.
