From Waihi.
VISIT OF COMMISSIONERS.
ANNUAL MEETING
(Official.)
The visit of our two "municipal masterpieces" to "Wellington resulted in a four days' visit to Waihi of two Conciliation Commissioners, to collect evidence from all and sundry as to the why and wherefore of the turmoil. How much evidence has been collected will perhaps be known later, but no official information was given by the Waihi Workers' Union to the commissioners. The strikers rightly maintained that all information required from a worker's standpoint could have been obtained at the Federation headquarters in Wellington instead of providing rest trips for underworked commissioners. The annual meeting of the union was held on Tuesday of last week, but owing to the strike the balance-sheet will not be completed until about a fortnight, when the meeting will be held. Several minor matters were dealt with, and at the conclusion of the meeting a member gave notice to move at the nest meeting that the Federation make arrangements with the mine-owners to draw up working conditions, and if suitable to the union ratify it under the Arbitration O&Surt. (This motion was moved by a member of the Waihi Workers' Union, not by a member of the Mine-owners' .Association.) It is safe to say that the miners will know how to treat such a bosses' idea as that. That is all the mine-owners, want—arbitration ratification. The "Waihi Daily Telegraph" denies the rumor that the two commissioners were out driving in Supt. It. E. Williams' automobile while in Waihi on strik« business. A Christian economist declared at a went meeting of the Men's Forward Movement that "sometimes Labor exploits Capital," but omitted to state whether W T. Mills or Geo. Fowlds was his authority. The Auckland "Herald" and "Star" will have to look to their laurels if they wish to retain their hitherto supremacy of Labor-haters and truthstranglers, as the "Voice of Labor," an alleged organ of an alleged "Labor" Party in Auckland is making very bold bids for the honor.
