FEDERATION CONFERENCES.

The art supplement to this wook's J_.AOUIIi.VND WOUKKIt containing the group of delegates attending the 1912 Federation of Labor Conference serves to emphasise the steady progress the organisation has made during the barely four years of its existence. The first conference of delegates of what is now the Federation of Labor was held in Orcymouth in 1908, and was attended by only seven delegates, representing 23~>0 workers.

A lew months later another conference was held in Wellington. This was attended by 16 delegates, representing 4263 miners. Twelve months later a third conference took place in Wellington, being attended by 26 delegates, representing approximately 5600 workers. This conference is particularly noteworthy because of its changing the mimo of the organisation from the New Zealand Federation of Miners to New Zealand Federation of Labor. We give a picture of the delegates on another page.

The first conference of the New Zealand Federation of Labor met in the Town Hall, Wellington, in August, 1010. Tho most noteworthy feature of the gathering was the remodelling of the preamble, constitution and rules to bring the organisation up to date. At this conferonco it was also decided to establish a weekly paper. The conference was attended by 20 delegates, representing between five and six thcisand workers. In 1011 no confers.. was held. The 1912 conference, held during ti month of May, showed a decided gai. in the numerical strength of the organisation. There were represented at the conference over 15,000 workers, who were represented by about 50 dolegates and officers. Tho work of that conference is but recent history, and needs no comment.
