The Hardy Middleman.

HOW TO AVOID HIM

From Henry 111. of England to the present time is some 700 years; aad for much longer than that the middleman has been out of favor with both producer and consumer. A statute of Henry recites: "Especially be it commtuidod that no foresfcallor be suffered to dwell in any town." It defines a forcstaller as "a man who, seeking his own evil gain, goes to meet corn, fisb. herrings or other articles for sale aa they are being brought by laud or water, carries them off, and contrives that they shall bo sold at a dearer rate." Such a man, the statute declares, "is the public enemy of tho whole' community and country. He that is convict thereof the first time shall lose the things so bought; the second time he shall have judgment of the pillory; tho third time bo shall be imprisoned and make fine. And this judgment shall be given upon all manner of forestalled ; likevviso upon those who havo given them counsel, help, or faYor." The middleman has not only persisted, but increased and flourished as the green bay tree, until to-day he has practically every industry in his grip. There is some excuse for the existence of the middleman where the manufacturer is net able to get in direct contact with the consumer; but we know of one ideally important instance in New Zealand' where tbe unorganised buying public has a chance to avoid the heavy come-between profits of tho middleman. We refer to the Crown Ckthing Manufacturing Co.. Ltd. This firm of wholesale manufacturers is tho first and only one in New Zealand to sell direct to the public.
