DEMAND FOR GOAL.

There is an extraordinary demand for coal, which the West Coast mines arc quite unable to supply (says the "Grey Star"). So keen is the demand that it is stated by those in a position to know that the whole of the output of certain mines for tho next five weeks has been purchased in advance. The position is so acute that coal companies aud contractors arc at their wits' end ie arrange for supplies. Blackball, State, and Brunner mines are working at high pressure, but unfortunately Papnros mine is lying idle waiting for some reconstruction movement. There is a feeling at Paparoa that if tho company does not go on with tho working of the mino tho Government should enforce tho compulsory clauses and develop what ia believed to bo tiie finest steam coal on this coast, ami thereby supply* the demand which exists without < allowing Newcastle coaj to bo imported.
