HOW AN AUSTRALIAN EVADED TIPS.
In London the system of extortion hae not reached the lengths it has in Paris, St. Petersburg, and the European health resorts (writes the London correspondent of the Sydney "Daily Telegraph"). At these places tho servants line up in tho hall in the order of their importance when a guest is departing, and brazenly extend their hands for tips. St. Petersburg has the reputation of being the worst city in the world for fleecing the departing guest, and yet an Australian who was recently on a visit to St. Petersburg got away from his hotel without tipping anyone. When ho encountered in the hall a lino of servants with extended hands ho seized hold of tho hands in fcurn, and expressing an earnest solicitude for tho owner's welfare, wished him farewell. But only a man who has taught himself to regard parsimony as a virtue could be capablo of such courftgeoua conduct.
