A TRIBUTE TO HARTLEY.
Sir,—Now that Mr. E. Hartley has left Auckland, I must express my opinion of our worthy comrade, who is so sincere in tho fight for the workers. During his brief stay at Auckland he proved himself a past master in the art of debate. Armed as he is with the truth, experience, and a. powerful intellect, I regard him as impregnable when put to the test. His lectures at the Opera House were most convincing, and should be copied weekly in Socialist journals. It would do much to show to the public what Socialists are really agitating for. If only ho possessed tho voice of 6ome other speakers he would have taken Auckland by storm. His instructive, yet simple word-pic-tures and illustrations, his witty wisdom and homely humor, were admired by all his hearers, many of whom were new converts to Socialism. His lecture on books in the Federal Hall displayed his charm and versatility. It seemed that he had read ten thousand books, and not one too many. Mr. Hartley is a man who can bo relied upon for sound advice in tho hour of need, and our loss ia Waihi's gain. In conclusion, I know that I am expressing the opinion of many in Auckland and elsewhere when I pay this tribute to so sincere a worker for the cause of Socialism. —Yours, etc.,
Auckland,
CARDI
