The schoolmaster was giving a lesson in grammar, and had written the compound word "birds-nest" on tho blackboard. "Now, he said, "can any of you tell mc what that little line between 'bird's' and 'nest' is for?" "Please, sir," suggested little Alfred, "for the birds to roost on."
