A UNION WANTED.
Word has reached this office that_at the Golden Bay Cement Works, Collingwood, the men engaged are forced to work under anything but fair and decent conditions. The wages paid for quarrymen, truck loading, etc., are 9s. per day, with timo and a quarter for overtime, vvliiLt laborers working in and around tho mill are paid Is. per hour for eight hours. All wharf work, such as discharging of coal and loading of boats wiib cement, etc., is paid for at laborers' rate's <u° wages, the men engaged on the ccorks being called upon to perform th.it work. Is it not possib'o for an crganb-cr to be sent along to form a union? A gcod number of the men employed are already unionists, having clearances in their possession, the rest being local men who wero never in a union in their lives, but it is understood that they are ready and willinc to icir, ono.
If a local man were to attempt to organise the men it is fairly safe to say .lis stay on the works would bo a very short one indeed.
