MINERS' MINIMUM WAGE.
Miners' wages vary enormously in Great Britain. At present thousands of the men are said to be working for ss, 3s, and even less day. The amount which will be asked for as a minimum is uncertain. Whilst some of the English and Welsh organisations arc willing to accept 7s per day, the Scottish miners think that the minimum should not be less than Bs, and that was the amount named in. the resolution of the National Federation. Should the resolution be adopted by the conference and the leaders of the Lancashire and Cheshire Federation are confident that it Avill be, the Conciliation. Board Avill be called upon to deal with the most momentous question that lias ever been submitted to it, for the colliery proprietors- are not at all likely to grant the full demand without resistance. They say that their expenses have been greatly increased since the passing of the-Eight Hours Act, that the cost of production tends to become greater and greater, Avhile they are not unmindful of the additional burdens that may be placed upon them if the National Insurance Bill becomes law. Moreover, the inspection of mines is being made stricter.
