The Mighty Mom
■- Organiser Semple left on Wednesday of last week for Auckland in connection .with the dispute between the Llikurangi miners-and the Northern Coal Company. Whilst in Auckland Semple met the Auckland General Labourers' Union and the Waterside Workers. He was next to go to Waihi in connection with Hickey's campaign, and afterwards his intention was to pay a visit to Gisborne, Napier, Wanganui, and Pa-tea, and make arrangements for a. ballot to be taken in each centre upon the advisability of joining the Federation of Labour. ..At time of going_ to press it looks as if he would be detained in Auckland. * • * * H. M. Fitzgerald (a specially-taken photo of whom appears in this issue) is \ speaking even .more capably than of | yore, and his "lectures in Auckland are - highly eulogised. Whilst touring the .] Waihi electorate h<y fairly sent his hearer.', wild with .the cleverness of his simplicity and the genittfe. .f his points. In
conversation with him we learnt that "the Canadian orator" is anxious-to return to British Columbia, ''where things happen," he says. He sees a gleat advance in the Dominion workingclass movement since last here. Not a few would like to hear him throughout New Zealand before he leaves us again.
Whilst in Wellington, F. R. Cooke, Secretary New Zealand Socialist party, busied himself consulting." re" Hartley's campaign and in- collecting funds for party organising purposes. The sturdy Fred expects to return, to the capital as a delegate to the anti-militarist conference.
Scott Bennett left Wellington on Friday night last, and after his Christchurch debate with W. T. Mills will return to the West Coast to complete his broken tour there. He will likely address a further meeting in Wellington on his way to Auckland, in yvhich city he purposes putting in a few farewell weeks ere leaving for Australia.
Mrs. H. Scott Bennett was given a rousing reception on attending the Sunday evening gathering of the Melbourne Socialist party in the Gaiety Theatre. The Melbournians are anticipating a revival when H.S.B. reaches them.'
P. H. Hickey and wife left Wellington last week for. Waihi. . "Pat" will remain in. the Ohincmuri electorate until the elections are over.
"Jack" Dow gray and "Bill" Parry are due in Wellington to-day. , The Mines Commission visited the Brunner mine on October 24. Next day the commission was at both the State mines, and later took evidence at the Courthouse. It had to defer inspection of the Blackball colliery owiug to a slip. The commission will probably return to Wellington, at the end of this week. . # * *
In an appetising letter; to: J . E. Duncan, secretary Waikato Miners' Union. Mary E. Marcy (for C. H. Kerr and Co.'/the world-famed. Socialist publishers) says: "We are very much-inspired over the reports of the splendid work going on in New Zealand. We shall publish in the September "Review" an article on Australia by Comrade Bussell. 'In it he says that the Labour party movement has killed the revolutionary movement in New Zealand. In an editorial Comrade Kerr refutes this statement, and we shall later on saymore in our magazine about the splen>did work the small revolutionary group is doing there."
Jay Fox, editor "Agitator" "Homo/*j " Wash., U.S.A., was in prison when thef, . last American niail left, for somo ' rca< son best known, to tyrannical - ism. His fearlessness might cause pe<fe«H ; pie to think. * at a H. Carroll, well-lmowh in' circles in the north as a staunch tier for Right, is now at Powlett rivers Along with others, he was responsibly % for the formation of a Socialist Group * in .Victorian coal field. * * *. This from "Justice" of August- 5 i_f. interesting: A very enjoyable was.spent on Monday last by a ammbea_] of comrades who had gathered to bid'l farewell to our two American, comrades;-! Robert Rives La Monte finished the Speed-making by saying i that revolutionary Socialism was safe this country so long as the S.D.P. was'; in existence to carry en its propa-* 1 ganda. This dinner will long be remew* bered by those who participated.
