LABOUR MOVEMENTS.
Activities of the New Zealand Federation. —Waterside Workers Captured.
Whatever may result from debates on "Unity proposals" between representatives of -'The New Zealand Labour Party" (Trades Council's organisation) and "The New Zealand Federation of Labour," ' the Federation is going- its own way for the present (says Wellington."Evening Post"). Its object is to join up as many unions as possible under its tiag. The latest capture is the Auckland Waterside Workers' "Union', which lias decided by 291 votes to 1~0 to join - the Federation, which now holds Auckland's three largest bodies of men workers —waterside, tramways, and general labourers. Mr. Hickey, who has been the prominent helpmate of Mr. Semple, states that the Lytti«_"ton waterside workers are now taking a. ballot to decide whether they will throw in their lot with the. Federation. The Wellington men will follow suit- next Monday and Tuesday. .■■.The. Westport "watcrsiders" are already in the Federation's fold, and it is claimed by Mr. Hickey that the men of Patea and Timaru are prepared to come in. Mr. Hickey says that it is not intended to take any additional ballots just now. The Federation is satisfied, for the present, to secure the allegiance' of the waterside workers North and South.
