TOLSTOI'S ESTATE.

There has been a certain amount of doubt as to what .would;, be the disposition of Tolstoi's estate at Yasnaia Poliana. At, first it was. thought that an American syndicate 'would acquire it for the purpose of an agricultural college and exhibition. This Avould ■ha.A'e been agreeable to the Avishes of Tolstoi, but only one br tAvo of liis children showed a disposition to give effect to their, father's Avishes, so negotiations were opened Avith the Imperial Government, with the result that the property has been purchased by the State "for £50,000. There is no doubt that had the Americans acquired the property they would have run it for all it was worth. We should have had pilgrimages to Tolstoi's home and all that sort of thing, Avhich would have been very inconvenient to the Russian Government; so by State purchase this difficulty has been obviated.
