MURDER OF MINERS.
According to the latest American returns available, 29,293 coal miners have been killed in U.S. and Canada during the last 20 years. The lastyear of which complete returns are available is that of 1908, when 2733 men were slaugliter-ed but of 712,209 employed, being at the rate of 3.82 per thousand. The American figures are the highest in til© world, higher than the coolie labor of Japan, where the percentage is 3.09 per thousand; Great Britain Inst decade, 1.29 pen- thousand; Austria, 1.35; France, 1.81; and Prussia, 2.13. It is noticeable that where the- men are well organised the percentage of deaths is much lower than. in. other localities. Apalling- as these figures arc, they are not complete, as it is well known that many cl&aths occur that are never reported.
