ENGLISH COAL MINERS.
Of any single English county Dui'ham has the greatest number of coal mine" workers/ 142,231,- Yorkshire oomes next with 135,194; South AVales and Monmouthshire claim 201,752; and Lancashire- and Cheshire, 100,576. These figures are for 1908". In that year there were 216,615 in all Wales, 124,144 in Scotland, and 631,463 in England, tihese being almost wholly north of the Trent. There are in Lancashire 2500 pit-brow girls, whose wages begin at Is 4d a day, rising to Is 6d and 2s-per 'day, which iigure is' - seldom exceeded. As their working days of the year do not exceed 200, the average wage r may ba put down at 6s 6d or 6s 8d per week. The colliers' wages average "about 28s a week.
