P. H. HICKEY FOR OHINEMURI.
Mr. P. H. Hickey is the selected candidate for . Ohinehmri of tJie branches within. the> electorate of both, the N-'Z. Federation of Labor and the Socialist Party. ' A New Zealander, he has nevertheless travelled abroad, and some years' ago visited England and America. In. the States he was a member of the widely-celebrated Western Miners' Federation, and within its ranks learnt much, of those principles, of industrial organisation with which he has since been so prominently and ably identified.
A member of the Miner's , - Unions of Denniston and Blackball, he rose to wide notice during the famous Blackball strike —a red-letter event in N.Z. histoiry—and was selected to make a tour of the Dominion on behalf of the. militant strikers.. His successful tour is a matter of common knowledge. Subsequently elected President of the Blackball Miners' Union, he was appointed by the miners to act with Mr. It. Semple in establishing the Miners' Federation, which was memorably done and about which much remains to be written. In due time this body became the N.Z. Federation of Labor (Reg.). Friend Hickey was the first secretary of the Federations and afterwards became secretary and orgaindser for the West Coast Workers' Union, while last season he was aai organiser for the shearers. He has been one of the leading figares in Federation of Labor anmals, has spoken and written much in ita interests, and has met with much newspaper attack —in. leading articles and otherwise.
He was largely instrumental in. winning the endorsement of the. newspaper scheme which resulted, in the purchase of "The" Maoriland Worker" and' its start as a, weekly. Recently ho wa*s made the paper's sub-editor.
"Pat" Hickey shows every promise of a useful and indeed brilliant career. He is an acceptably striking and agitational speaker, and a welcome platformist upon political and* industrial questions. At present lie is campaigning in and about Wai hi. He will make a big and creditable fight for the workers of his electorate, and if he is returned will make history. . " .
Young, energetic, 'well-informed, hia return, to Parliament would be a gain to his electorate and to his beloved Dominion.
