THE STRUGGLE FOR EXISTENCE.

Sir, —The abovernamed is a work which, in my opinion, should be in the ironic of everyone who has the interests of the producer of wealth at heart. I have read it with interest and, L hope, profit. It is the most lucid and clear-ly-expressed statement of the position 'of the masses . that I have yet seen. How well it shows that all of the avenues of wealth are now legally •held by the few and operated for the increase of capitalism at the expense and poverty of:the many. Rings and corners are" created in" foodstuffs and wearing apparel to the harm of thousands of desjerving families, which hunger, ill-clad, while merchants and •members of syndicates and trusts swell th-eir finances. Professor Mills lays the whole history of the system bare with tho hand of a master of plain, earnest 'language. His conclusion —"and heauo it is that the many cannot live at all except on terms named by the few" — is well put. It recalls Robert Burns: See yonder poor o.'er-labored wight, So abject, mean and vile, Who begs a brother of the earth To give him leave to toil. Alas, to have it said that in this fair new country families, worthy families, are in. dire want, while- the leaders of our political affairs,' the makers of our laws, are ■becoming•■ wealthier,'partly-'«-s members of close' corporations which prosper at the expense of the muss of the people. I would strongly advise all earnest and despondent Maoriland •workers, fathers of families, and those who find remunerative employment difficult to read this fine work, and not only that, but to act according to its logical finding by looking better after their real interests. —lam, etc., , Wellington.
