He Avho lights and runs away, May Ha'c to fight another day ; - But the unionist aalio stays aA\*ay Helps his union to decay. ;,-•'* ' * . * """ Despite .employers' insinuations to the contrary, the man of exceptional ability or productive capacity is not compelled either by his union or iby an aAvard to refuse, higher Avages than, his less, expert felloAv-Avorker. '■'*'''*' * The development of the factory system in Russia can be clearly traced by the enormous increase in the number of female-workers. Whereas in 1904 the percentage of women and girls was .34.9 per cent., in 1909 there was an increase of TO per cent. The number of females employed in Russian factories last year Avas 566,000. * *- * "The Sunday at Home," in an Article on the religious, social and spiritual condition of the South Wales miners, gi\M?s the lie, to the statement •that the teaching of Socialism tends to make the people less moral or less clean living. A most readable article is summed up ivith the statement that the present situation in South Wales is one'of transition in politics and religion, but that, "Avhatever superficial observers may think, the moral and social condition of the people is not altogether un satisfactory." A grudging admission, maybe, but still an admission. ■*• * * Wyoolclassers from the South Australian School of Mines have formed an association, and hare fixed rates of pay as folloAvs: —For sheds of 30,000 sheep' and over, £1 per 1000; for 20,000 to 30,000, 22s 6d per 100; fewer than 20,000, £4 per Aveek, or 22s 6d .per 1000. First-class rail and coach fare is also claimed. Mr. C Jeffrey is pre? sideht, and Mr. V. O. Foil a lid secretary. The members are required to possess a second year advance certificate, and the committee must be satisfied-as to their individual capacities'. Special "Doavii Avith Conscription" number next AA"eek. Wire late orders. *' . * * It is amusing to find how near to the truth the capitalist press gets at times. Commenting upon the impending dissolution of the Standard. Oil Trust, recently ordered by the highest Court in the United States, the "Weekly Budget " says : " Throughout history economic forces haA-e over-ridden political restrictions as expressed in laws. ' It is more than improbable that so mighty a. monster as the Standard Oil Company, complex of construction and far-reaching, can be crushed by mere judicial decisions." >j: T. * ''Contract" shearing, it Avould seem, has come.to stay in Australia. But few stations, big or little, do their oavii shearing hoav. But the system has its draAvbacks for. both the squatter and the shearers. Most. oAAners of plants are in the business to make money anyhow, and often at the cost of the oAvner avhose, sheep are frequently "woo] hawked" to earn the cheque quickly. Then again it causes the fast shearer to have a call OA-er the aA'erage man: and finally it causes the Shearers Accommodation Act to be- mocked, or, at the least, honoured in the breach only, not the observance. * * * Special "Doavii Avith Conscription" number next Aveek. Wire late orders. «- ■ * - -xDuring the sitting of the Shearers" Conference in Wellington last AA-eek, Delegate Jack Cooper receiA r ed a Avire intimating that his father had passed' aAvay at Temuka on the 31st ult. As the'telegram' had been delayed a considerable time, it Avas impossible for our comrade to reach Temuka in time to take part.in the last sad rites over his parent's remains. Jack has the sincere sympathy of all his felloAA's in this his hour of sorroAv. "- * ■ ■ it -:<■ FEDERATION EXECUTIVE MEMBERS IN WELLINGTON. Everybody Avas glad to see them, and they did splendid 'work. President Webb and Organiser Semple came to .Wellington' last Aveek ; t!o discuss things Avith the shearers' conference. Practically Wednesday, Thursday and Friday Avere so taken up. On Saturday the visitors intervieAved the Paparoa Coal Co. directors, Avith satisfactory results. They also saw the Minister for Mines, and got matters adjusted re Cass-Beal-ey Avorkers. On the same morning they addressed a mass meeting of Avatersiders. In the evenings they discussed matters with Messrs. DoAvgray and Parry, and found time to attend a Wellington Federation meeting, a Socialist Party meeting, and the social to Wm. Cornish, leaving last Saturday night for Christchurch, at Avhich place they addressed croAvded meetings on Sunday. A big. quantity of details re 4 'Worker was also attended to."
