FOURTH DAY.
On resuming, conference passed a vote of condolence with Mr. J. Cooper (Wellington delegate) en the death of his father, and adjourned for fifteen minutes a.s a mark of. respect. Resolved: That conference record their sympathy Avith Mr. Donald Macdonnell, the general secretary of the A.W.U., during his illness, and hope that he had a speedy recovery; they also sympathised Avith him on the loss of his seat in Parliament, and trusted he- would regain thisThe resolutions passed the previous day Avere then read to the Federation delegates, and they expressed thedr Avish to confer with Messrs DoAvgray and Parry, members of the Federation Executive, AA r ho AA'ere also in Wellington, before giving their definite reply. Mr. La racy gave notice that he desired to move the folloAving resolutions at a later stage : — (1) That in vieAv of the fact that the Federation delegates have now definitely relieved the shearers, as incoming members, of the legal responsibility they Avould othe'nvise assume in connection with the £2000 borrowed by the Federation in 1910, this conference of shearers places on record the AA-dllingne&s of the Shearers' Association to furnish from time to time in the future such financial assistance loAvards the establishment of the paper as the Association's membership and finances warrant. (2) That the Federation delegates be requested to furnish' forthwith an approximate idea of the loss on tho running of the -paper since it Avas handed over to the management of the N.Z. Federation of Labor, such loss to be shared proportionately by ■ the shearers as members of the Federation of 'Labor. The shearers' delegates generaly expressed their approval of these resolutions. It Avas agreed that the balancesheet should not be- published at this stage, but merely submitted for information. In reply to questions, Mr. Semple said that*the representation offered on the Executive and on the Newspaper Board would hold good until next conference of the Federation of Labor. The Federation delegates then retired, and the consideration of the agenda paper was resumed by the shearers. The folloAving remits from Gisborne Avere passed unanimously: —(1) That the general secretary visit Gisborne district during next shearing season; (2) that the Gisborne secretary bo alloAved to get a printed list of the flnancial members of the Union in that branch; (3) that the Gisborne secretary be instructed to . Avrite out and get printed the form he requires for district committees. The following remits from Pleasant Point AA'ere carried : That it be a rule that where there is any doubt as to the fitness of the sheep to be shorn after rain, not more than tAA'o sheep be shorn by each individual shearer before a A-ote is taken; that reps, have a casting vote only : that in the event of a ballot being taken on Avet sheep, any man Avho considers the sheep are Avet shall go to the rep. of the men before going to the boss of the board, before leaving the board; that the increase in shearers' tickets to £1 be dealt Avith at next conference.
