IMPORTANT REMITS.

Among 'the Auckland Waterside Workers' remits to the annual conference of the W.W. Federation are the following: — That with a view of preserving the health and ensuring a minimum of comfort to the members of this federation,' this conferenceraffirms the absolute necessity for all bags, sacks, mats, etc., containing lime, cement, bonedust, basic slag, and superphosphates being made dust-proof, by being lined with paper or otherwise treated; further, as the federation has ample evidence that it is useless to approach the Arbitration Court or the Conciliation Council for assistance or protecton in this matter, this remit shall be an instruction frotn corference to each branch of this federation and every member thereof to decline to handle lime and cement (unless contained in dust-proof bags or casks( on and after the Ist of January, 1912, except at double the ordinary cargo rates. That realising that no industrial worker wilfully or for fun gets maimed or mutilated while following his employment, and flrther affirming that no worker should be penalised, in addition to his injuries (often sustained as a result of bis employer's negligence), by having his earnings reduced 50 per cent., this conference" calls iipon the Government to so amend the Workers' Compensation Act as to provide for the payment of full wages by all employers, to each and all persons meeting with accident while working in their employ. : This conference, believing that the federation of all unions engaged in any particular industry having proved a move in the right direction, is of opnion that the principle should be extended to ts utmost .limit, with a view of drawing each and every worker in New Zealand into closer totick with his fel-

lows and for mutual protection. Bearing this in mind, the Council of the New-Zealand Waterside Workers' Federation here assembled, is of opinion that the time is ripe to merge into the New Zealand Federation of Labour (as registered). Further this conference invites (in a fraternal spirit) the Federated Seamen and Carters to move with us into affiliation with our brothers, the miners, shearers, labourers, and others. Failing a move on the part of the New Zealand Waterside Workers' Federation to affiliate with the New Zealand Federation of Labour, each branch of this federation (through its, delegates he -c assembled) pledges itself to orant free initiation, either on clearance or on production of a satisfactory pence-card or contribution-book, to any member of any other organised industrial body of workers in New Zealand,

without any further restriction. (At present most Waterside Workers' Unions will only accept clorances from other Waterside Unions. The miner or general labourer holding a paid-up clearance is treated as a non-unionist, his clerance not being recognised. The Auckland Union deserve credit for this remit.)
