Fighting Conscription.
Swelling Protests.
An Anti-Conscription League was formed in Wellington on July 9. W. McG. Smith was elected secretary and Mr. H. Garlick treasurer. It is the indention of the League, by meetings and literature, to arouse the people to a senso of what underlies this latest move on the part of capitalism. A mass meeting will be held in His Majesty's Theatre on Sunday, July 23, when various speakers will deliver addresses against the scheme. In Christchurch the opponents of conscription have formed an organisation under the title of the National Peace and Anti-Militarist Council of New Zealand, to organise those who are protesting against the Defence Act to take united action m an effort to have the objectionaole clauses tepealed. Mr. L. P. Christie has been elected secretary, and Mr. C. R. "M. Mackie treasurer. the ofh.ce of oha Council for the present is 102 Hereford street. Memoers of the Auckland Society of Friends waited upon Mr. Fowlds, Minister of Education, on July 15 and expressed their fiim intention not to participate in compulsory military training. Much as they love their country, they would emigrate rather than undergo compulsory training. In reply, Mr. Fowlds said that he sympathised with them as far as their conscience was concerned. If it had not been for the insertion of the qualifying clause, he would not have been a party to the Act.
