" God Save the King."
By JOHHN SMITTH. Lord of the flaming universe, Omnipotent, divine! Lo, for a while wo turn us from A human throne to Thine, And up against tho silent skies There beat, O Lord, our pleading cries. Not for tho heavy-laden ones You blessed, long, long ago, Wo never pray for them, as Thou Assuredly must know; Not even, Lord, tho children's cries Havo caused our prayers to upward rise. Wo pray, Almighty Power, for ono Who even is as Thou— A king, a monarch, one who wears A crown upon his brow; For such, Creator, wise and great, Wo lowly bow and supplicate. Let famine stalk tho land, let war Its myriad victims claim ; Let children starve in foetid slums, Fair women sink in shame; Our prayers shall have the same old ring: "Tho raco be damned—but save the Kingi"
SIR Joseph Ward's baronetcy ought to about settle Ward's posing as- a democrat. His intention to fasten the hereditary principle upon this new land should be everywhere resented. No democrat can consistently accept a royalist title, least of all a title which perpetuates itself by the accident of birth. We can rejoice at Andrew Fisher's rejection of "honors" even while we sorrow at his presence among the snobs and exploiters. Men not working-class leaders have before now refused "honors.**
