SECTARIAN TRAINING
RUNANGA'S PROTEST
A public meeting was held in Runanga recently to protest against tho compulsory military training scheme. J. Rollett presided. The speakers contended that not only was the idea of military training opposed to work-ing-class interests by the fostering of false ideas of patriotism, and subservience to the ruling class authority, but the efforts of the churches to take advantage of the scheme to establish sectarian corps was particularly objectionable. Sectarianism was a curse to the labor movement, and because of that they should do all in their power to prevent th© hideous monster raising its head. Instead of the church uniting in one strong protest against this idea of slaughter they were to be found Cwith rare exceptions) encouraging it in every possible <vay. Verily, Christ's teaching of the "Brotherhood of Man" was being prostituted by His alleged followers. The following resolution was carried unanimously: "That we, the inhabitants of Runanga, protest against Compulsory Military Training; also against the action of those churches who support the act by introducing sectarianism."
The Runanga Socialist party hold their annual ball on May 26, which proved a great success. A large number of friends came from Greymoutsh and helped very materially towards the evening's enjoyment. v The floor was perfect. The refreshment stall was in charge of our genial comrades Webb and Price. Comrade Piner proved an efficient M.C., and with Comrade Booth, as secretary of the party, worked most assiduously towards success.
In reply to a suggestion from Mr. Semple, the Minister of Mines_ stated he waa quite prepared to fall in with the idea of the ~ proposed Ambulance Hall at Runanga being incorporated with the suggested Physical Culturo Hall, and ensuring a first-class building for both purposes,-
