Christchurch and Militarism.
COLLEGE STUDENTS FOR THE
ENEMY.
Minister Millar is anxious to hear the voice of the people regarding compulsory military training ! Well, it -would have done his heart good if ho could have been present at the vast mooting of tho : Christ--hureh Socialists and heard the voico of the people yell "aye" -when we submitted the following resolution : " That this meeting enters its emphatic protest against tho Compulsory Military Training Act of last session." Amongst the audience was a considerable number of youths who are* liable under this Act, and if Minister Millar could have heard those boys he would havo realised that the Government has got a hard row to hoe before it will get those boys "trained."
At a meeting- held by the Baptist Lay Preachers' Association in the Salvation Army Hall, the Canterbury College students attended in force to oppose the following motion : " This ,r eting is of
opinion that compulsory military training is a direct violation to the liberty of conscience that has stood for so much in tho growth of the British Nation, and is in direct opposition to tho progress of humanity.
The Socialists turned up in large numbers which enabled the promoters to carry the motion, after which tho meeting broke up in disorder.
The College students held a meeting afterwards outside tho Supreme Court, speaking from the steps, and attempting to carry a motion : " That this meeting believes in compulsory military training." Comrades Howard and Cooke spoke against tho motion, but in the disorder and uproar it "was impossible to determine the fate of it. Perhaps Minister Millar will hear something knock shortly.
