ROBERT EMMET, THE MARTYR-PATRIOT. Born March 4, 1778; executed September 20, 1803,
"I am going to my cold and silent grave—my lamp of life is nearly extinguished—my race is rim—the grave opens to receive mc, and I sink into its bosom. I liave but one request to ask at my departure from this world. it is TH3 CHARITY OF ITS STXENCE. Let no man write my epitaph ; for as no man who knows my motives dare now vindicate them, let not prejudice or ignorance asperse them. Let them and merest in. obscurity and peace; and my tomb remain uninsetibed, and my memory in oblivion, until other times l and other men can do justice to my character. W-hen my country takes her place among the nations of tho earth, then and not xiiiii then, let my epitaph be written. I have done."—ltobert Emmet in the Dock. :, Oh! breathe not his. name-; let it sleep in the shade, Where cold and unhonored his relics are laid, Sad, silent, and dark be the tear that is shed. Like the night dew that falls on the grass o'er his head. t: But the night dew that falls, though in secret it weeps, Still freshens with verdure the grave where he sleeps. So the tear that is shed, while in secret it roils, Shall long keep his memory green in our souls !"—Tom Moore.
