A BANKRUPT CHURCH.

Dear "Woukeb., —I read in a Sydney paper that at a meeting of the elders of the Presbyterian Church in a country town in New South Wales, the startling statement was made that the church would have to be declared a bankrupt, as the A.M.P. Society were about to foreclose the mortgage they held upon the church property. The reason given for this c-r-r-ruel act was that it was common knowledge that the congregation wore scanty. Since scanty congregations mean scanty ' : sprats," w~e may assume that it was the Lack of

•sprats-," not of congregation, which brought about tho downfall of this Calvinistic institution. Thus does sordid commercialism assail even the •"spiritual" world. The irony of the whole business lies in the fact that it was Scotchbyterian which suffered. Surely the Church had reason to expect better results from tho canny folk! ORTHODOX.
