Award has Far-reaching Effect

AUCKLAND, April 3. A slight discussion that occurred at the Arbitration Court this morning disclosed, the fact that the dairy employees* award made some time ago. according to terms agreed to by the employers." and ■'■'-employees, will have an Unexpected and far-reaching effect, possibly with seriou* consequences to those who milk One or two cows arid earn a few shillings by supplying neighbours with small quantities 01 milk. The matter cropped up through an application: being, made on the suggestion of the Milk Veridprs' Association to add a large number of parties to the award. The persons' cited'include all those who are the registered owners of dairies and embrace everyone, who has a dairy irrespective of size and number of cows milked. The' award ih\ the trade; provides for wages and ~/commission to men engaged in: delivering:; milk, and makes, no. provision- foa- the employment of boys of .other cheap" labour in the - case of people who;-sup-ply, milk to a few neighbours, and who,' it is claimed, should be bound by the terms of the award because entering intocompetition with milk vendors. : The : position appears to be that these people who are engaged in the trade in a small way .at present _ may increase- the scope of' their operations at any time- and escape prosecution for a.breach commit* ted until such time; as they are added as parties. In order to protect /them; selves from this possible danger and £o combat unfair competition, the milk vendors have taken the present action to have all dairy owners added as parties to the award. Qn the." other hand, the people . who keep a few cows or have a surplus supply of milk will not be able to continue snpplying to neighbours by. labour other than their own, - even precluding the' employment of their own children if the application is successful. The matter has been adjourned till Friday morning next. :
