State Mines and Pillar Working
A large meeting of the State Miners' Union, held in the Miners' Hall, Runanga, discussed at some length the system of pillar extraction in vogue at the State Mine. It was clear from ths» interest displayed that this question was a very acute one, and one which had been the subject of much argument for some months past. The men were unanimous in their allegation thas the present method was a most dangerous one, and contended that human life should be the first consideration. The following resolutions were passed unanimously : — (1) That a deputation be appointed to discuss with the manager the advisability of instituting another method of pillar extraction. (2) That this meeting endorse th® method suggested by the committee r® splitting of pillar, and timber to be drawn out of all worked-out lifts. (3> That the deputation consist of the President and Secretary asnd Messrs. Buchanan and Arbuckle.
