CHRISTIAN EVIDENCE.

Dear Editor,— Being only a layman, you may imagine that it is with " fear and trembling" that I approach this subject. I am very glad that Mr Howlett asks for books. I can recommend a few. They are by intellectual and scientific men, and I presume that they will bear examination. I am unacquainted with Mr Howlett and his social position, but I take it that he is removed a little from the ordinary, since he can so ably dictate to you what manner of correspondence to allow in your column. (See his on Quack Medicines.) Now, it does seem strange that such an one has not even heard of any work on Christian evidences. One thing he surely knows, i.e., there is such a force operating in the world as Christianity. It is a mighty social power. We have the facts and figures to prove how much it lias done for the poor unfortunates. Your correspondent, I notice, is very gentle in his application for the ' Evidences/ , though, I must confess, when I read his letter first, I thought the wolf was showing under the sheepskin. I am not quite rid of that idea yet, but in case I am mistaken, and our well-informed friend is really trying to discover something that is 1900 years of age, I proceed to name a few works on Christian evidences:- —- (1) Christianity: Its Nature and Truth, by Prof. A. S. Peake, D.D. (price 2s 6d). Published by Duckworth and Co., 3, Henrietta Street, Covent Garden, London. (2) A Manual of Christian Evidences, by Rev Prebendary C. A. Row, M.A., D.D. (Hodder and Stoughton, London), 3s. 6d. (3) Is Christianity True? This is a series of lectures delivered in Manchester, thirty in all (by priests). Chas. H. Kelly, Castle Street, City Road, London, E.C. (Published in England at 2d each.) (4) Modern Doubt and Christian Belief, by Prof. T. Christlieb, D.D., 10s 6d. (Hodder and Stoughton.) (5) In Relief of Doubt, by P. E. Welsh, 6d. (Hodder and Stoughton.) (6) Defence of the Christian Faith, by Prof. Godet, 4s. (Hodder and Stoughton.) (7) Apologetics, by A. B. Bruce, D.D, 6s. (Hodder and Stoughton.) (8) The Faith of an Evolutionist, by T. A. Palm, M.A., M.D., 2s. (H. R. Allenson, Ltd., 7, Racquet Court, Fleet Street London, E.G.) Thanking your in anticipation, I am, etc., * F. FROST. Millerton, January 9.

Dear Editor, —I am surprised at one who is seeking after Christian evidences, or some book in defence of Christianity. He or she should be old enough to know that Christianity does not need, any book of defence. There are plenty of books written about Christianity, although I don't think that any book would be of \ise or pleasing to one who is asking such foolish questions. Neither will they believe though one was to rise from the dead. They would say : He was only in a trance; he was dreaming. Such persons don't want evidence, they only want to talk. Christianity began with spirit; the spirit is life. You need no book in defence of life. Take the animal life out of the world, and all the other evidences die with it; and when the spirit of Christ is taken out of the world, then all the evidences of Christianity will go with it. —Yours, etc., JOHN MACKIE, Seddonville. Secretary Industrial Union of Workers,
