TENNIS A friendly game was played between Roxburgh and Lawrence teams on the Lawrence courts on Saturday. While the visitors won easily by 13 sets to three, it should be noted that the Lawrence players were somewhat handicapped by unavoidable last minute changes and were, in the men’s section particularly, not at their full strength. The presence of Strang, an ex-Southland champion, added considerably to the Roxburgh challenge, as in all his matches he was never really extended. Possessed of a medium fast service and all round stroke equipment, his court craft and experience were too much for G. Weston whom he defeated 9—l. The closest game was the combine Gilchrist and Miss de Lautour v. Winchester and Mrs Drummond, the Roxburgh couple emerging victorious after a three times disputed vantage point. The following are the results: — Men’s Singles G. E. Weston 1, Strang 9. G. R. Weston 1, Laloli 9. Winchester 7, Gilchrist 9. Thomson 3, George 9. Ladies’ Singles Miss Weston 1, M!rs Frew 6. Mrs Winmill 6, Miss P. de Lautour 4. Miss Burgess 6, Miss J. de Lautour 4. Mrs Drummond 6, Miss Vernon 5. Men’s Doubles Weston and Weston 4, Strang and Laloli 9. RACING (By ‘Ginger Jack’). Forbury held a successful meeting last week. The Australian pacer, Logan Derby, made many friends by his perfect manners and extreme speed which enabled him to win both principle races on the programme. Central Otago was again put on the map by Big Author, who made history by defeating Logan Derby in the final event. Several promising sorts were to be seen and likely winners in the near future. Fine Art put up a phenomenal effort to run round his field over the last half in 58sec on a track ■considered in some quarters as being slower than Addington.
