Stronach Morris, Dunedin, report for week ending Thursday, 6th October: — Fat Cattle. —The entry yesterday was much smaller than usual, only 165 being yarded. The demand was very keen and prices all round showed a rise of 20s to 40s per head. The greater rise took place in medium weight bullocks of prime quality. Extra prime heavy bullocks to £25 12s 6d; prime £22 10s to £24; medium £lB 7s 6d to £2O 12s fid; light from £l4. Prime heavy cows and heifers to £l9 7s 6d; prime £ls 17s 6d to £l7 12s 6d; medium £l2 17 fid to £l4 15s; light from £7 17s fid.
Fat Sheep.—An entry of approximately 1200 sheep was penned. The quality on the whole was only medium, there being very few consignments of prime heavy sheep forward. The bulk of the entry consisted of medium weight wethers with a fair proportion of light and unfinished sorts. Prime heavy ewes were in short supply. The market for all prime sheep can be quoted on a par to a shade firmer, and with the short supply of heavy ewes, these were fully Is fid per head above last week’s rates, with all fedium sheep on a par to a shade firmer. Prime heavy wethers to 40s, prime 34s to 36s fid, medium 28s fid to 31s fid, light from 22s fid, prime heavy ewes to 29s 9d, prime 25s to 27s fid, medium 19s fid to 22s fid, light from 16s.
Fat Pigs.—There was a small entry of fat pigs and these met with keen competition, prices all round being firm on last sale’s rates.
Store Pigs.—There was a small entry of store pigs and these met with keen competition, prices showing an advance of 5s to 6s per head on last sale’s rates.
Oats.—There are very few offering at present and the demand is quiet. There is still a fair inquiry for heavy lines of Gartens suitable for seed purposes and these are bringing up to 3s, on trucks, country sidings.
Wheat. —There is no milling wheat offering in this district and fowl wheat still meets with a good inquiry at up to (Is 6d ex store, Dunedin.
Potatoes. —The market is lifeless and heavy stocks are still being held in store. Sales are difficult to make except for freshly picked lines, King Edwards are bringing up to £4 and Arran Chiefs £2 10s, ex store, Dunedin.
Chaff. —Sufficient is coming forward to meet the local inquiry and the demand is confined to prime bright oaten sheaf which is bringing up to £5 15s ex store, Dunedin. Sheepskins—We held our sheepskin sale on Tuesday when we offered a fair sized catalogue to a good attendance of buyers. Owing to buyers having their limits
increased, there was good competition and prices generally showed an advance of last last sale’s rates.
